Taiwan welcomes its 9 millionth overseas visitor of the year (2014/12/03)

The number of overseas tourist visits to Taiwan continues to set new records. Total visits have already topped 9 million this year, and the Tourism Bureau has its sights set on the 10-million mark next year.

Led by a traditional Chinese band, Lo Tak Pui from Hong Kong became the 9 millionth visitor to Taiwan this year. The Ministry of Transportation greeted him at the airport and offered a large gift package and warm reception befitting a special VIP guest.

A group of reporters also greeted him, which was quite a surprise.

The number of visitors to Taiwan is experiencing annual growth. Last year saw 8 million visitors, and this year more than 9 million have already visited.

David Hsieh
Tourism Bureau Director-General
We are looking for diverse development across the globe with even growth for each market. For example, Mr. Lo is from the Hong Kong and Macau market, where we saw 18 percent growth. But the market where we saw the largest growth was Korea, which increased 61 percent.

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, Taiwan ranked number 1 in the world in terms of overseas visitor growth, followed by Japan and Mexico.
