Arrival of YouBike in New Taipei City could spell early demise of Newbike

New Taipei City was heavily criticized last year when it launched a bicycle sharing system that cannot be used in conjunction with Taipei’s bicycle sharing system. Now, in what appears to be a costly policy reversal, New Taipei City has begun to install the same system used in Taipei.

When YouBike made its debut today in New Taipei City, several people were up early to try these orange and yellow bicycles.

“I can cut travel time in half by riding this.”

YouBike is expanding to New Taipei City after becoming popular in Taipei. It already has stations in Xindian and Xizhi, which are easily accessible from Taipei’s Wenshan and Nangang districts.

New Taipei City’s goal is to have 60 rental stations by the end of the year and 300 within three years. It will have a total of 8,000 bikes. But does this mean that New Taipei City is giving up on its original plan to integrate Newbike with YouBike?

Eric Chu
New Taipei Mayor
A holistic approach is needed when promoting cooperation in Greater Taipei. This absolutely isn’t a case of one side having to compromise.

Mayor Eric Chu didn’t elaborate. But he did say the city would find another use for the Newbike bicycles which it has already purchased.
